Is hair loss a possible side effect of low testosterone?

For many guys, hair loss is a typical source of worry. If you are balding or losing your hair as you get older, it may be quite frustrating since it can greatly affect your confidence and appearance. One of the most frequent uncertainties that arise in response to this worry is whether low testosterone can be a cause of it and whether testosterone replacement therapy is necessary.

So, is your balding or hair loss caused solely by low testosterone? Yet, while it is generally accepted that low testosterone can result in hair loss, the link between the two is not clear-cut. Low testosterone can contribute to hair loss but it is not the sole reason.

Some of the reasons that can cause hair loss are as follows:

·         Genetics:

Baldness is one of the numerous features that is greatly influenced by genetics. According to research, genes have a major role in the development of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can lead to hair loss, can change how sensitive hair follicles are to inherited genes from both parents.

·         Hormones:

Hormonal imbalances such as low testosterone can also result in hair growth problems in addition to many other problems that these hormonal imbalances can cause to the body.

·         Age factor:

Aging has a big role in hair loss. People's hair naturally thins and grows more slowly as they become older. Moreover, hair follicles may shrink and generate hair strands that are thinner and weaker. Hormonal changes, genetics, and other factors can make these alterations worse.

Although there is some correlation between them, low testosterone and hair loss are not always related. It's also vital to keep in mind that testosterone helps to promote hair development on the scalp, face, chest, and pubic region of the body, among other places. The use of testosterone replacement therapy has gained popularity among many people due to a link between hair growth and testosterone. Nonetheless, it is strongly advised to speak with a qualified medical professional before making such a significant decision.
